Wrestling journalist Dave Meltzer recently spoke about the reason why WWE dropped Drew McIntyre from the Black Friday Invitational Battle Royale.
Drew McIntyre is one of WWE’s top stars, and she’s arguably the top babyface on SmackDown. During his two WWE Championship reigns, The Scottish Warrior has led the company through the pandemic.
This week on Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer revealed that WWE is looking to recycle a potential storyline where Drew McIntyre would run out of opportunities as authority figures. Meltzer suggested that the plan may have been the reason McIntyre was not included in the battle royal on Friday’s episode of SmackDown.
“So the main thing, obviously, is Brock Lesnar is back next week,” Meltzer said. “And they’re doing a new gimmick where authority figures are trying to screw up with Drew McIntyre, which is a whole new story that WWE has never done before. But then, you know what they’re doing. They are repeating things of the past. I mean we are seeing the same thing everywhere.”
As seen in the clip above, Sami Zayn eventually won the battle royal to earn a shot at Roman Reigns’ WWE Universal Championship.
Drew McIntyre looks very upset when he is out of the battle royal on WWE SmackDown
Ahead of WWE SmackDown, the company announced that the next Reigns contender would be determined via an invitational battle royale for Black Friday. As the match was added to the show, many fans saw McIntyre as the clear favorite of the win.
During a backstage segment, The Scottish Warrior spoke to Adam Pearce and Sonya Deville and requested them to join the battle royal. At the time, two WWE officials said that they did not have a final list of participants. But when the list came out, McIntyre’s name was not on it.
The Scottish warrior was furious about this excommunication, and tried to take matters into his own hands. Moments before the start of the match, McIntyre reached the ring with his sword and cleaned the ring. But after the break, the broadcast team made it clear that McIntyre had left the field of his own free will.
Going forward, it is pertinent to know how the Scottish Warriors would react to the way Pierce and Deville dropped them out of the match. He is likely to do whatever it takes to earn the title shot, regardless of any obstacles in his way.
