Former writer says Legend should wrestle first WWE match in 20 years against returning CM Punk (EXCLUSIVE)

WWE legend Vince Russo feels that an event between the returning CM Punk and X-Pac between Royal Rumble 2023 and WrestleMania 39 could be a huge success.

It’s no secret that The Second City Saint’s association with AEW is in its final stages. Although it had been several months since Punk was involved in a backstage feud with The Elite, it was only a matter of time before he parted ways with the company. As such, many fans are also speculating about seeing CM Punk make a grand return to WWE, possibly at this year’s Royal Rumble 2023.

Speaking with Russo writing for Sportskeeda Wrestling, Vince Russo also made an interesting point about a possible Punk return. The former WWE writer said that CM Punk should start the Royal Rumble with X-Pac in 2023, with the feud culminating at WrestleMania 39.

Vince Russo believes that since the two actors have very different characters, their feud could be successful if the promotion gives them creative freedom.

“Brother, I’ll tell you what would be cool, and we’ve talked about it here as well. Think about it, brother, especially in the Royal Rumble, and then you go to WrestleMania with it. Whose straight edge is it? Bro , you put Punk and Sean Waltman on a schedule from the Royal Rumble to WrestleMania, and you let them come up with creative, I’m telling you, I think it will (…) and you really want Punk change the same way,” Russo said. Vince Russo on why Chad Gable would have been a perfect opponent for X-Pac in WWE
Russo also mentioned how a talent like Chad Gable could have been the perfect foil for X-Pac returning to WWE. However, Vince Russo stated that since Gable was booked as a “joke” in WWE, a feud between them would not work.

“It’s a shame, bro because they haven’t built someone to eliminate them, like if they did it right, someone who would be the exact opposite of X-Pac and despise X-Pac Everything he stands for would be Gable. But he doesn’t mean anything anymore. He’s a joke. This guy is a legit wrestler; that’s perfect! But they made a comedy out of him. So, this Won’t work” Russo said. (7:05 – 7:45)

Whether or not X-Pac or CM Punk return at Royal Rumble 2023, fans can still expect plenty of surprises at the January 28 show.
